Check Your Owner’s Manual
Using the wrong oil blend and weight, or maintaining the wrong fluid levels can damage your vehicle, so double-check your owner’s manual to make sure you’re properly caring for your vehicle. If you’ve lost it or you prefer not to flip through the thick book to find the information you need, you can probably find a digital copy of your owner’s manual online.
Wear Protective Gear
Before you jack up your car and get to work, make sure you have the right protective gear for you and your home. To protect yourself, wear rubber gloves and keep clean towels handy for wiping away oil. To prevent oil from staining your driveway or the floor of your garage, it’s a good idea to place a tarp beneath your vehicle.
Let Your Vehicle Cool Off
We don’t need to tell you the damage hot oil can do, so let your car cool down completely before you start your oil change. To save yourself from a nasty oil burn, a good rule of thumb is to turn off your car and wait at least 30 minutes.
Use A Funnel
You might think you have a steady hand, but the hole at the top of your engine is rather small. Use a funnel to make sure all of the oil goes into your engine. If you have a spill, wipe it up with a clean cotton towel.

Check Your Oil Levels
Using a dipstick to check your oil levels is easy. Just pull it out, wipe it clean, reinsert it, then remove it again. The second time, check where the fluid lines up with the markings on the dipstick. You should check the oil levels after you pour each bottle. Check again after you’ve driven a few miles.
