Winter can really be a drag. Cold weather and less sunlight can leave you feeling drained, but these tips can help you put a pep in your step all season long.

Take Preventative Health Measures

One of the main reasons for a drop in energy during the winter is getting sick. Nothing can deplete your energy as quickly as catching a cold or getting the flu. On top of the sickness itself, being ill can throw of your daily routine and you might have a hard time getting back into the swing of things. Help keep the cold and flu at bay by maintaining protective habits such as washing your hands often, drinking plenty of water, and adding nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables to your diet.

Stay Active

Generally, doing more saps more energy but when it comes to getting your body moving, the opposite is true. Find ways to fit physical activity into your daily schedule and you’ll notice that you have more energy throughout the day. Your active time doesn’t have to be strict and regimented.  Here are a few easy and fun ideas that don’t involve adding a morning jog to your routine.

  • Reserve Friday nights for a living room dance party with your kids.
  • Jump rope in your bedroom for just 15 minutes in the morning.
  • Make a habit of going roller skating at your local skating rink. Garden Roller Rink in Ashland, Kentucky is always a fun time.
  • Hula hoop in the living room.
  • When it snows, don’t sit inside. Go out and have a snowball fight, build a snow man with your kids, and get a dose of fresh air.

Let the Sun in

It’s no secret that sunlight has a positive effect on your mental health. It can increase your serotonin and boost your mood, and a happier you is a more energized you. If you have a window in your office, open the blinds and let the light stream in while you work. If not, try to spend plenty of time in the sunlight outside of work hours. On the weekend, open your curtains and bask in the sun’s energizing light, just remember to wear sunblock.
